    Pause November 2020 | Editorial

    We really love that moment where all of the skills learned during the 3 days of Pause Floral Workshop comes together during set up of the editorial. Our students’ eyes light up when they take a step back and observe what they have accomplished together. Thinking about each flower and creating something with intentionKayla, our beautiful model, brought life to the exquisite Alana van Heerden gown. We could not stop staring at her, standing in the middle of this dreamy floral set up.

    For our Pause November 2020 editorial we focussed on soft romantic textures and light colours by using mostly white and creamy flowers. We used a mix of golden grasses and lace flower growing in masses from the floor to create a path to the arch that evokes the feeling of walking in a meadow. The linen draping was the perfect backdrop for the hanging clouds our students created with dried hydrangea and also for our dreamy arch. Please see full credits at the bottom of the page.

    Weltevreden Estate is an amazing venue just outside Stellenbosch. They have a restaurant, kids outdoor wonder-world and accommodation on the farm. The staff (Venue Manager Libby) was absolutely amazing and they treated us and our students with so much care and respect. Nothing was too big or too small to ask.     Our students were treated with delicious food and drinks throughout the 3 days. Day 1 we had some delicious filled chicken with a cheesecake for dessert. Day 2 we had a hearty bowl of pasta and yummy chocolate fondant for dessert. On day 3 we ended off with amazing lamb chops and veg! Dessert of course being a yummy chocolate brownies.     “Here we go again”

    We are still pinching ourselves thinking that we did not have one but TWO succesful workshops last year. This time around we decided to keep things more intimate with a smaller group of creatives.

    8 Beautiful flower souls from all around the country invested in this journey and trusted us with their creative hearts.

    It is important for us to make our students feel special. Our little labour of love after each day of class is to set the table. We just love to see their faces when they walk in each day and see all of the special details put together just for them.

    Day 1 was all about theory and tablescapes. When learning a new skill (or even just sharping up old ones) it is best to start at the beginning. So we start with the basics and build our students up to a point where they have the skills to do anything they put their mind to. 

    Meet The Flower Cartel


    We are lucky enough to have an awesome relationship with our flower growers and flower agents. Two of them is Louise (& Conrad) from The Wild Flower Bunch and Francois from Fanna & Flora. They also have another partner Anneke. These four decided to combine their efforts and The Flower Cartel was born. Bringing you seeds and garden kits delivered directly to your door!

    We introduce to another amazeballs friend of ours, Design by Marcel. Marcel is also from Tulbagh (like Anli) and he is literally the king of foraging. We are so lucky to have him educate our students on responsible foraging and also for sharing some of his favourite (and oh so funny) foraging adventures.

    Day 3 is all about the installations. We cover certain mechanics that you would mostly use when doing large installations. Here we only focussed on arch, growing installations and hanging installations. During this session, we love to take a step back and observe our students. It is really amazing to see how they’ve grown in only 3 days, hearing them laugh and chatting up a storm with their new-found-flower-friends. Have a look at our Pause November 2020 editorial here.

Our students’ eyes light up when they take a step back and observe what they have accomplished together. Mari, our beautiful model, brought life to the exquisite Alana van Heerden gown. A informal tablescape formed part of this dreamy editorials with simplistic flowers and romantic candles.

    For our Pause August 2020 editorial we focussed on dark moody colours by using dark red lilies and rust coloured cymbidium orchids. The dried grasses we packed everywhere complemented the moody colours so well, we couldnt stop staring at this beautiful set up. The linen draping was the perfect backdrop for all the hanging clouds our students created with dried hydrangea, kapok bush and other foraged textures.     Would you guess that we were shaking in our boots when this photo was taken?

    What an amazing experience this was!

    Our first ever Pause Floral Workshop and WOW, did we kick this journey off on a high note! 16 Amazing and creative hearts came together (and spent their hard earned cabbage) to share in our knowledge.

  • Why Pause?

    Why Pause?

    We have been experiencing a ‘more is more’ movement in the floral industry over the past few years.

    Although we can appreciate the massive scale and complexity of most of the designs, we have been feeling an intense yearning for scaling back, exploring simplicity in floral design and appreciating the pause and intention behind each and every flower we place. 

    Enjoying the unique curve of a wild flower, the curl of a dried leaf, or a mass of just one type of flower, as it would appear in nature. A quiet celebration of space that calms you down and inspires your soul! 

    I think it is so important to realise that simplicity does not automatically mean an all white palette or that you are only allowed to get excited when your colour scheme resembles something from 50 shades of beige. Amanda actually does get excited by those monochrome colours. She has never been a massive lover of strong bold colours, not until she met Anli! Anli really challenged her with the addition of colour to the first Pause workshop. 

    The ultimate goal of any design piece is to make an impression or convey a message. We feel that simplicity ensures that an arrangement or floral installation has maximum clarity. Having said that, simplicity definitely doesn’t mean one dimensional or boring, neither is it the same as minimalism. We know, it can be a bit confusing, but an easy way to explain it would be that minimalism is the reduction of quantity (using less flowers and decor elements for example), and simplicity is the reduction of complexity (using less types of flowers, or more of the same).

    We want to help an aspiring florist who craves this notion of simple design to stay true to their nature but also show them how they can do that while respecting their client’s brief. Thats why we think this workshop is going to be such an awesome experience. We are going to challenge the way you look at simplicity and also how different it is from minimalism.
